Depression and Stress Management Programs
Recent years have seen a significant increase in claims for “psychological injury” (usually “stress”).
This program covers stress and depression management strategies and focuses on:
- Education about the psychological aspects of depression and/or stress plus instruction in goal setting.
- Education about the role of cognitions on mood and learning to identify and modify unhelpful and negative thinking patterns.
- Developing ways to change unhelpful behaviour patterns and adopt more appropriate and active coping strategies.
- Learning strategies to manage worry, including applied relaxation techniques.
- Instruction in problem solving and communication skills.
- Dealing with setbacks and devising a maintenance plan using strategies such as eliciting support from others.
- Reviewing material covered to reinforce and consolidate progress, overcoming any new obstacles as well as planning ahead.
The primary goal of this program is to assist workers to return to work with a greater capacity to cope with (possibly ongoing) stressors.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Program
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTDS) is a common problem following motor vehicle accidents and other traumatic work incidents (such as hold ups, assaults, or incidents causing death).
This program aims to overcome PTSD by focusing on:
- Identification of appropriate goals plus education about the role of cognitions on mood, anxiety and traumatic responses.
- Identifying and modifying unhelpful and negative thinking patterns related to perceived physical and emotional vulnerability, replacing distressing thoughts with more constructive and helpful ones.
- Developing ways to change unhelpful behaviour patterns such as avoidance via gradual confrontation of feared memories and situations (known as “exposure”).
- Learning a range of more appropriate and adaptive anxiety management strategies such as applied relaxation techniques.
- Dealing with setbacks, problem solving and devising a long-term maintenance plan.
- Reviewing material covered to reinforce and consolidate progress, overcoming any new obstacles as well as planning ahead.
The goal of this program is to help people regain confidence, overcome fear and anxiety, and return to work following traumatic events.
Pain Management Programs
This program aims to overcome the problems associated with chronic pain by focusing on:
- Providing education about the psychological aspects chronic pain and the associated problems
- Identification of appropriate goals, focusing on realistic and achievable goals despite pain
- Learning a range of more appropriate and adaptive management strategies such as applied relaxation techniques
- Learning to gradually pace up activities despite pain, focusing on remaining more active, more consistently
- Identifying and modifying unhelpful and negative reactions to pain, replacing the unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with more constructive and helpful ones
- Dealing with setbacks, problem solving and devising a long-term maintenance plan
- Modifying the responses of family members or significant others to allow the person to do more for themselves
- Learning effective sleep management techniques
The goal of this program is to help people resume their usual activities (including returning to work) despite ongoing pain.
